Health Regulator Not Fit for Purpose – Streeting
Published by BBC News on 26 July 2024, 04:43 BST
The Care Quality Commission (CQC), responsible for regulating NHS and care services in England, has been declared “not fit for purpose” by the Health Secretary, Wes Streeting. This statement follows an independent review uncovering significant failings within the organisation.
Key findings from the review include:
- Inspectors lacking necessary experience.
- A backlog of assessments, with one in five services unrated.
- Inconsistent assessment results.
Mr Streeting expressed his shock at the scale of the issues and has announced emergency measures, including the appointment of Sir Mike Richards to lead a rapid review.
Ms Kate Terroni, the interim chief executive, and other leaders at the CQC have acknowledged the findings and are beginning to implement necessary reforms.
